The Phoenix and the Valet

One of the wonderful things about living in Phoenix is that we are accustomed to wide open spaces.  Take the drive to California on the I-10 and you will know what I mean.  Among the many benefits to being here is that we aren't constrained by the transportation and space issues that inflict so much heartache on our more urban neighbors like San Francisco or Los Angeles.

It is in this context we have witnessed a stunning and baffling proliferation of 'complimentary' valet parking at some of our favorite dining establishments.  It's almost as if there is a cadre of greedy dark suited executives who are trying to convince us and our restaurants that we live in Manhattan and that valet service is needed in spite of the fact that most establishments sit in the middle of very accommodating parking lots.

One only needs to look at the primary reasons that typically justify this kind of service and compare it to our local market to quickly dismiss it as absurd.  First, is there a shortage of space and property?  Our urban communities are about as dense as the interior of the Saguaro Cacti that dot our streets.  Even districts like Old Town or Mill Avenue have enough spaces or options to accommodate the smart driver.  Second, is there enough demand from a segment- think Elderly- that would normally value such a service?  Granted we have our fair share of folks in their Golden Years but most of the restaurants offering valet are targeting the sophisticated 'eat local' hip crowd, not exactly early bird AARP card carrying types.

I could go on but I will leave you with this.  Next time you are accosted by a group of short sleeved wearing hoodlums and cone obstructions ask your self why do these things need to stand between you and a perfectly empty parking lot.
