Leoni’s Focaccia

Naturally the focaccia is the showcase item here but don't discount the quality meats and cheeses stuffed between the light and savory bread.   Definitely worth the effort of having to deal with the Scottsdale/Shea intersection and worth the added cost of in order to get a truly delicious sandwich.

Sassy’s Cafe & Bakery

Shabby Chic meets the family dinner.  Think of  a poor man's Sweet Cakes Cafe... complete with the sandwiches, cookies, and the scores of women gathering for the lunch and the latest gossip.  Sandwiches above average but man those cookies are something special.  

The 'Must Try'-  The cheesesteak is good but the real reason you are here is those cookies

Noble Eatery and Bakery

This place has the pedigree and expectations that come from Claudio Uriciuoli and his time at Noca and his apprenticeship with Nancy Silverton.  A very simple setting and concept executed at a high level by one of the best craftsmen in the Valley.

Yes it sort of has the ambiance of a low grade frat house with a menu that appeals to the same crowd but that's alright because these sandwiches are top notch.   Factor in the very personable service and you have one more place in the East Valley worth visiting.

Dilly's Deli

A long-standing Phoenix spot serving up solid soup and sandwiches for the hurried business lunch crowd.  Still stands out in an increasingly competitive and creative sandwich landscape.

Breadcrafters Bakery & Cafe

It has a lot of the elements that you look for in a great neighborhood bakery.  What keeps it from joining the Varsity lunch list? The space is awkwardly cramped.  The lackluster soups detract from otherwise solid sandwiches.

A welcome respite for those in the Kierland area who want a good, cheap lunch and don't want the cost and formality of its neighbors.  It would be nice if the sandwiches came with something other then a pickle spear but that doesn't diminish the taste of some of the best in the area.

Sure it is way out in the west Valley but the drive is much shorter then a flight to Baton Rouge for those who want prime Cajun flavor.  The ingredients of the shrimp Po Boy blend together like the sweet sounds of Dixeland jazz and the offering here is akin to listening to that jazz performed by Louie Armstrong.

These guys aim to please and their menu will have you anxious to see the baguette dressed in various global settings.  I personally recommend those sandwiches that incorporate the Korean heritage of the owners. Tired of sandwiches? Try some of their rice bowls.

One of the better options at this price point.  The selection and quality put it at the front of the class with the bonus cookie helping to distinguish it from its peers. I do appreciate their naming conventions, as it reminds me of all of those peaceful afternoons spent sleeping during my Art History class.

Tucked away in the heart of Old Town Scottsdale this place prides itself on its sandwiches and soda bar.  Their average sandwiches and higher price point hold me back from really giving this local spot a wholehearted recommendation.



The 'Must Try' - Sandwiches are ok but make sure you don't leave without getting a homemade soda.

The Farm Kitchen at South Mountain

This place is a world away from the urban desert that is Phoenix.  The kind of spot you take the kids to on a Saturday afternoon in November to get some fresh food, kill some time, and picnic in some crisp air.

Vermont Sandwich Company

I'm willing to overlook all of the Phish memorabilia on the wall because they probably feel obligated to follow through on the whole Vermont stereotype. But these sandwiches aren't just sandwiches.  I plan on putting on an old pair of Birkenstock's, mellowing out, and spending some serious time working my way up and down this menu.
